To Be A Better Wife

To be a better wife I need a husband who’s here.

helping at home with the chores
sharing the work so that I can have more
giving me time to relax just by being there.

chopping the veggies at night
washing the dishes that lie in the sink
giving me time to sit with my cup of chai.

He’s needed everywhere
shopping lists and laundry duty, tidying up.
Learning that his wife can’t cope, she’s doing enough.
Love makes him care that I rest
he’s sharing the housework, I feel really blessed.
There’s hope in my eyes as I finally realise
he will be there. And everywhere.

Here, there and everywhere.

The lyrics of ‘To Be A Better Wife’ are written to the music of Here There and Everywhere – a song composed and written by the Beatles. I wrote this during the lockdown of 2020.

Thanks to my husband for the writing prompt ‘To be a better wife’ and for brightening up my life by helping out with chores at home – on days he commutes to work, as well as during the lockdown.

Thanks to my mum for the daily singing practise and for letting me bounce ideas for the lyrics off her. This is the first time in years that I’ve been able to talk to her on the phone without having to mop, clean, cook or dust while I do so, and we’ve able to sing together over the phone.

It’s been nice!

This video was a fun family activity for all of us and I recorded it in hope that it promotes social change and for no other purpose.

    1. Thanks Murisopsis! Yes he is.

This project kept us entertained during the early months of the lockdown. We live in flats/apartments and couldn’t go out. So this was some much needed offscreen entertainment amid the crazy busy of learning and webinars I took to learn online teaching and become more tech savvy.

    1. Thanks Vignesh! Chores actually keep one healthy. A hospital in Andheri actually gives diabetic patients a list which says do housework. It gets people moving before and after meals and keeps blood sugar spikes down.

These days, with work-from-home, we’re all desperate to hang out the washing just to get some movement into our sedentary days ha ha!! Never thought I’d see the day.
